When building zoos and bird parks, selecting an appropriate enclosure netting system for peacocks stands as one of the most vital decisions in exhibit design. The choice of netting material not only safeguards the safety and health of animals, but also greatly influences visitors’ viewing experience and the long-term operating costs for project owners.
Accordingly, a growing number of zoo operators in Europe, North America and Australia have chosen stainless steel wire rope mesh as the prime solution for peacock enclosures. This popularity is attributed to the material’s remarkable properties: high strength, great flexibility, excellent visibility and exceptional durability.
Recently, we have fully completed the production, inspection and packaging of this batch of custom stainless steel bird wire mesh for our Australian client’s peacock enclosure project. The goods have been delivered as scheduled. We wish the client a smooth installation process, and hope our products will contribute to the construction of bird parks across Australia.
Stainless steel bird wire mesh, also known as stainless steel cable mesh or wire rope mesh. It is a type of metal mesh woven from multi-strand twisted stainless steel wires via cross weaving technology. Compared with traditional welded metal mesh, galvanized wire mesh and PVC-coated mesh, it boasts irreplaceable core advantages.
The woven structure gives the mesh excellent elasticity and shock absorption. When peacocks get startled and dash into the netting, the mesh can absorb impact force without rigid rebound, greatly lowering the risk of animal injuries. This is especially critical for peacocks. Their precious tail feathers may suffer permanent damage if caught and snagged by rigid mesh grids.
With cable diameters ranging from 1.6 mm to 2.0 mm and a high open area ratio, the mesh is nearly invisible against the surroundings. Visitors can watch peacocks with almost no visual obstruction. In particular, the spectacular sight of peacocks displaying their tails will not be blocked or segmented by the mesh.
Made of 304 stainless steel containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel, the material forms a stable passivation layer outdoors to effectively resist erosion from rain, salt spray and acidic soil. With regular use and basic maintenance, its service life can reach 20 to 30 years. For bird parks and zoos located in humid or coastal areas, we also supply 316 stainless steel, which features superior corrosion resistance compared to 304 grade.
We offer full customization to meet various project demands. Mesh aperture, cable diameter, panel size and surface color can all be tailored as required.

This order comes from an animal park in Australia. Its peacock exhibit has been in service for many years. The original enclosure was made of traditional galvanized wire mesh. As time went by, issues such as rust, sharp burrs and mesh deformation became increasingly serious. These problems not only spoiled the overall appearance of the park, but also raised safety concerns among the animal care team regarding the peacocks.
As part of the park’s renovation and expansion plan, the management decided to fully upgrade the fencing for the peacock enclosure, with clear requirements for the new facility. The new enclosure must guarantee the peacocks’ safety, deliver a better viewing experience for visitors, adopt a lightweight design to minimize visual obstruction, and feature outstanding durability to avoid frequent replacement and maintenance in the future.
After evaluating various solutions on the market, the client found our company via our official website and sent us the first inquiry email.
After receiving the customer’s inquiry, we conducted in-depth technical communications with them. The whole process lasted around two months, involving multiple rounds of email exchanges and detailed confirmation of specifications.
We first learned full details about the peacocks in the exhibition area, including their population, daily activities, and whether other birds were kept together in the enclosure. During the communication, the customer shared a key piece of information: part of the exhibition area adopted a semi-free-range mode. Peacocks tend to linger and forage near the fence for long periods, which means they come into frequent contact with the enclosure. Accordingly, the mesh requires excellent flexibility and sophisticated edge finishing.
Accordingly, we recommend 304 stainless steel wire rope with a diameter of 1.6 mm. This mesh strikes an optimal balance between strength and flexibility. It can fully withstand daily physical stress while retaining good elasticity, so it will not cause hard injuries to peacocks.
Throughout the technical communication, the most debated and thoroughly discussed topic was the choice of mesh size. The customer initially intended to use larger meshes, believing they could improve visibility and reduce visual obstruction from the fence. However, we put forward professional safety advice. Overly large meshes pose a risk of peacocks, especially young ones, getting their toes or ankles trapped. Additionally, they cannot effectively fend off small predators such as stray cats.
After in-depth technical discussions, we jointly confirmed 50mm × 50mm diamond mesh as the standard specification for this project. This proven solution has been widely applied in numerous zoo projects. It guarantees the peacocks’ freedom of movement and safety, without noticeably blocking visitors’ viewing lines.
Another key detail discussed with the client was the installation solution for the top enclosure mesh. The exhibition area features a large roof span. If a single full-size mesh is used, it will sag and deform under its own weight and wind pressure, while also bringing great difficulties to installation.
We proactively proposed a sectional design for the large top mesh. Each section is made within a reasonable installation span and connected with special binding wires. This design ensures overall structural stability, greatly eases installation work, and cuts maintenance costs for partial damage in the future. The client highly recognized and adopted our proposal.

After the solution was finalized, our production team immediately scheduled production and provided the client with a detailed estimated production lead time.
All 304 stainless steel wire ropes for this order were sourced from our long-term and fully verified suppliers. Batch sampling tests are conducted upon warehouse receipt. We firmly believe that substandard stainless steel may cause rust issues years later and bring troubles to the client. Raw material control is a principle we never compromise on.
The wire rope mesh is fully hand-woven to ensure firm joint strength and prevent loosening under long-term tension. After weaving, every mesh panel is rechecked for dimensions to guarantee no panel is smaller than the required size.
Black oxidized mesh is a popular option among clients. Finished meshes are sent to the treatment workshop for surface oxidation. Beyond aesthetics, the black coating offers practical advantages: against green plants and natural surroundings, the black mesh is nearly invisible. It greatly minimizes visual obstruction, allowing visitors to focus entirely on the animals.
Once all mesh panels are produced and surface-treated, our quality inspection team carries out a full-range inspection. After passing all tests, the products proceed to packaging and delivery.
This is far from our first peacock enclosure project. Over the years, we have built long-term partnerships with zoos, wildlife parks and private aviaries across France, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore and other regions. We have noticed that an increasing number of professional clients are phasing out traditional galvanized wire mesh and switching to premium stainless steel rope netting.
The advantages are summarized as follows:
The core philosophy of modern zoo management has shifted from simply containing animals to creating a comfortable living habitat for them. Featuring flexible structure and burr-free edges, stainless steel rope netting greatly reduces the risk of injuries when animals come into contact with enclosures. It fully complies with the latest animal welfare standards set by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.
Immersive exhibition areas have become a mainstream trend in zoo design, where designers strive to make enclosures visually unobtrusive. Boasting superior transparency among all fencing materials, stainless steel rope netting delivers an almost unobstructed viewing experience for visitors.
Many clients worry about the upfront purchase cost. However, calculated over a 20-year service life, stainless steel rope netting requires no anti-rust painting or frequent replacement, and only simple water cleaning for daily maintenance. Its overall operating cost is much lower than that of conventional galvanized mesh, which needs replacement every 3 to 5 years. It is indeed a cost-effective solution for zoos in long-term stable operation.

Throughout the cooperation, the client demonstrated great professionalism in procurement. They studied the technical solutions carefully, verified every parameter in detail, and fully respected and trusted our recommendations.
